Extended Family Cover
Extended Family Cover* enables dependants aged 21-31 to be on your membership, provided they aren’t a full-time student, trainee or apprentice or married/in a de-facto relationship.
This option costs a little more than standard cover, but it’s less than your dependant would pay for their own (base-level) membership. And there's no additional cost for covering more eligible dependants.
Please note that if your would-be dependant’s income is over the Medicare Levy Surcharge threshold they’ll pay extra tax if they don’t have their own Hospital cover. So they may want to seek tax advice before you go any further.
Dependants already on your membership
In these scenarios, we check-in with you before your dependant is due to come off your membership so you have time to consider your options:
- Turning 21 – they're set to automatically roll off your cover
- Finishing full-time study – you won’t be re-registering them as a student dependant.
Dependants not on your membership^
Those who aren’t already on your membership and may be:
- New to health insurance
- Currently without health insurance (i.e. previous cover has lapsed)
- Cancelling their existing cover with us or another fund.
Or those are eligible to re-join because:
- We’ve increased the maximum age on Extended Family Cover from 24 to 31
- They’re divorced or have separated from a de-facto partner.
Adding a dependant
You can add your dependant via Online Member Services. Go to:
- My membership
- People covered
- Add a person
- And take it from there.
You can get a quick estimate of the potential cost via the quote tool in Online Member Services. Go to Payments > Get a quote.
When it’s time to go
If your 21 – 31-year-old dependant is getting married or going de facto they’ll need their own membership. Please contact us beforehand so we can take them off your cover and set up theirs (if they’re ready to do so).
Otherwise, dependants automatically roll off Extended Family Cover when they turn 32.
*Extended Family Cover isn't an option if you're on StarterPak (Basic Plus) or Emergency Ambulance cover.
^Waiting periods may apply for dependants who are new to health insurance, have been without cover for more than 60 days or join on a higher level of cover than they held within the previous 60 days.
